Accepting working students

Acceptance of Working Students

With rapid changes in industrial structures and increasing job mobility, there is a growing need for individuals who, after entering the workforce, seek to acquire the latest and most advanced knowledge and skills, as well as to continuously update themselves with new insights and technologies.
At the same time, the acceleration of globalization has created a strong demand for engineers and researchers who can play active roles internationally. However, in many cases, obtaining a doctoral degree is essential for those wishing to work as scientists or engineers abroad.

To accommodate working professionals, the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology offers various systems and programs that make it easier for them to pursue advanced studies while continuing their careers.
As of May 1, 2012, 132 working professionals, accounting for 43% of all students in the Doctoral Program, were enrolled in the graduate school.

Application of the Special Provision under Article 14 for Working Students

This provision allows graduate education to be conducted in flexible ways—such as holding classes or providing research supervision in the evening or at specific times and periods—when it is deemed educationally necessary.
At present, most working professionals enrolled in the Graduate School complete their programs under this system.

Early Completion Program

Working students who build on one’s professional achievements and experience to obtain a doctoral degree, or students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance after admission, may complete their program earlier than the standard duration.
It is possible to complete each Master’s Program and the Doctoral Program in as little as one year.

Long-term Study Program

To accommodate students who are unable to complete their studies within the standard period due to work or other professional commitments, the Graduate School offers a Long-term Study Program.
For example, in the Doctoral Program, students may be allowed to extend their period of study for up to six years.
If approved at the time of admission, tuition fees equivalent to the standard three-year amount will be evenly divided and paid over the approved extended study period.

Special Admission for Working Stundents

Applicants who are currently employed and intend to continue their professional work after admission may apply through the Special Admission for Working Professionals instead of the regular admission process.
This selection is conducted through an oral examination that evaluates the applicant’s professional experience and achievements gained in the course of their career.
