Master’s Course (2022.4〜)Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Admission Policy (Master’s Programs)

We are looking for motivated students who are interested in the foundational fields of natural science, who possess foundational knowledge of mathematics, physics, or computational science, and who have a highly inquisitive mind in their own specialized fields. We are also looking for students who aim to play an active role in the future as researchers at companies and research institutes, or faculty members at educational institutions.

Basic Policy for Selection

The mathematics course focuses on applicants’ academic ability in specialized foundational subjects of mathematics (differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, set and topology, complex function theory) and English reading comprehension and practical usage. The motivation to learn mathematics and overall ability will be evaluated through oral examinations.

The physics course focuses on applicants’ achievements in specialized foundational physics subjects (mechanics (including analytical mechanics), electromagnetics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, etc.) and English, which is an international official language in the field of science. In addition, the willingness to study physics and thereby contribute to the development of society will be evaluated through oral examinations.

The computational science course focuses on applicants’ academic abilities in mathematics (differential and integral calculus, linear algebra), physics (mechanics, electromagnetics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics) and computation (programming, numerical computation) as specialized foundational subjects of computational science, and English as a means of communication. The degree of interest in mathematical and natural phenomena and the depth of that interest will be evaluated through oral examinations.

Desirable Abilities for Admission

《Mathematics Course》

Basic academic abilities in English and specialized foundational subjects of mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, sets and topological spaces, complex function theory) are required for all applicants.

《Physics Course》

Basic academic abilities in English and specialized foundational subjects of physics (mechanics (including analytical mechanics), electromagnetism, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, etc.) are required for all applicants.

《Computational Science Course》

Basic academic abilities in English and specialized foundational subjects of mathematics (differential integration, linear algebra), foundational physics (mechanics, electromagnetics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics), and computational science (programming, numerical computation) are required for all applicants.

Curriculum Policy (Master’s Programs)

We offer three courses (mathematics, physics and computational science) to develop the ability to solve basic problems in the natural sciences theoretically or experimentally at a fundamental level. Foundational subjects, specialized subjects, and development subjects are provided according to year progression, with an emphasis on seminars and special lectures. Through these activities, we will nurture students who have the ability to solve various phenomena and can play an active role in various fields within the community.

Evaluation of the learning outcomes will be based on examinations, reports, exercises, seminar presentations, etc. within the foundational, specialized and development subjects. Task-oriented research will be conducted based on the master's thesis and its presentation.

《Mathematics Course》

Students will explore general and abstract subjects in each specialized field of mathematics and develop the ability to understand the true nature of things. We start with foundational subjects and aim to be at the forefront of research in development subjects.

《Physics Course》

Various subjects including particle physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, and biophysics are provided. Students develop the ability to unravel the basic laws hidden within complex natural phenomena.

《Computational Science Course》

Basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is acquired in the foundational subjects, and that knowledge is linked to the development subjects from the perspective of application to natural science and engineering. Students will develop the ability to make full use of techniques such as computer simulation in applied computational science subjects.

In all courses, we have a research guidance system comprised of multiple faculty members. The courses not only produce highly-skilled professionals, but also provide foundational education for the doctoral program.

Diploma Policy (Master’s Programs)

Students will acquire advanced expertise and research methods in mathematics, physics, and computational science, and develop the ability to solve various problems in the natural sciences at a fundamental level. Also, they will develop the ability to apply the acquired specialized knowledge and research methods to solving various problems in the international community and the natural world as highly skilled professionals and researchers. We will systematically develop such abilities. Students must obtain the prescribed credits and pass an inspection of their master's thesis to obtain the degree (master's degree).
