The Doctoral Level Section of the Integrated Course is made up of six divisions: Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Material Chemistry, Mechanical Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Environmental Design and Natural System, and each division is divided into several courses.

While academic research in science and technology grows ever more specialized, the need for interdisciplinary and comprehensive knowledge has been increasing; therefore the Graduate School aims to provide teaching and research that go beyond the boundaries of each specialization.

The doctoral level section for the latter three years of study at the Graduate School accepts people who have a Master's degree or the equivalent. Through its system of multiple advisors, the course aims to produce technicians and researchers with multi-disciplinary skills, comprehensive knowledge, and originality.

We are open to mature students and foreign students, and have accepted many.

Since 1997, the Graduate School has allowed mature students to enroll while remaining employed, as special exceptions, according to the provisions in Article 14 of the Standards for Establishing Graduate Schools.

Features of our Curriculum

The Graduate School provides a multi-disciplinary curriculum consisting of multiple fields of natural science such as science and engineering. This enables students to interact with professors from a wide variety of faculties and be exposed to a wider spectrum of science and technology.

The following points are notable features of our curriculum:

1. A group advisory system, with three advisors assigned to each student, from as wide a range of faculties as possible
2. Student involvement in professorial research projects and cooperative research with external companies and research institutes under the supervision of advisors
3. Plenty of guidance for each student, using a syllabus that maximizes the effectiveness of the curriculum

The educational system is designed to give students inter-disciplinary and comprehensive knowledge, and clarify their research motivations.

Conditions for Completion

In order to complete the doctoral level section, a student must be enrolled for three years or more, gain ten or more subject credits, receive research advice, and pass the final thesis examination. However, in cases of exceptional merit, the period of enrollment may be shortened for students who have already spent at least a year enrolled.

The Degree

Students who complete the doctoral level section will be awarded the degree of Doctor. The subject field will be that which the student was affiliated with: science, engineering, or philosophy.

Extended Enrollment System

If it is difficult for a student to complete the course within the specified period because of their employment situation or for another reason, the enrollment period can be extended for systematic study. If extension of the enrollment period is approved, the tuition fees for three years can be paid in equal installments each semester of the extended period (six years maximum).
