Master’s Course (2022.4〜)Division of Biological Science and Technology

Admission Policy (Master’s Programs)

The Division of Biological Science and Technology provides the expertise and practical skills necessary for research in each field of life science (which probes the mystery of life and life phenomena), marine biological resource science (which involves the ecology and physiology of various species in the ocean and terrestrial waters, leading to food production), and bioengineering (which applies biology to human society with engineering ideas, in order to realize a rich and sustainable natural environment and a human society in harmony with nature). We develop human resources who can play an active role in the international community with rich humanity and creativity by acquiring presentation / communication ability, flexible problem identification / solving ability, and plan execution ability. We welcome students who are enthusiastic about academic research for pioneering new fields and who want to play an active role by utilizing their expertise in science and engineering.

Curriculum Policy (Master’s Programs)

In the Biological Sciences course, the curriculum is organized according to the following policies:

  1. We provide graduate school common subjects in order to broaden the horizons of science and foster ability in technology management and international exchange.
  2. We provide common subjects for majors, including “skill subjects”, to cultivate problem identification / solving ability, information collection / analysis ability, presentation ability and an international perspective, which are required for conducting research. We also cultivate information gathering ability and information analysis ability, which are required to carry out research.
  3. We provide specialized subjects in order to carry out education aimed at further developed interdisciplinary life science based on biology and related fields, including molecular biology, cell biology and ecology, from the basic to applied level.
  4. We assign a Master's thesis research task and provide task-oriented research to cultivate presentation and writing skills. This is a program centered on experimental research activities focusing on human beings and life phenomena related to the natural environment, aiming to develop logical thinking ability, and to acquire the ability to apply it practically.

In the Bioengineering course, the curriculum is organized according to the following policies:

  3. Specialized subjects are provided to foster logical thinking ability. Students conduct educational research focusing on complex life science phenomena, especially those related to human beings, and also develop an interest in a wider range of life science phenomena, and the skills to apply such knowledge.
  4. We assign a Master's thesis research task and provide task-oriented research to cultivate presentation and writing skills. This is a program centered on experimental research activities focusing on human beings, life phenomena related to human life and the natural environment, aiming to develop logical thinking ability, and to acquire the ability to apply it practically.

Basic Policy for Selection

Students entering the Division of Biological Science and Technology should have sound basic knowledge in any of the fields of biology, marine bioresources, and biotechnology, and a desire to contribute to the realization of comprehensive scientific development and rich lifestyles for humankind in collaboration with other fields. Specifically, applicants’ basic abilities, qualifications, and academic motivation will be comprehensively judged based on academic ability tests (written and oral exams, or oral exams only), English external exam scores, and academic transcripts.

Desirable Abilities for Admission

It is necessary to understand the natural sciences in general, and basic academic ability in biology, marine bioresources (Biological Sciences course), chemistry and biology (Bioengineering course) is especially important.

Diploma Policy (Master’s Programs)

The diploma policy of the Division of Biological Science and Technology is as follows:

  1. Acquire specialized knowledge in each course and related fields and practical expertise in investigation and research, and acquire the skills to apply this knowledge to life science and engineering.
  2. Acquire the ability to analyze issues of the international community, propose how each field of the major can contribute, and propose and implement solutions.
  3. Acquire the ability to propose, investigate, and solve global environmental problems and realize a resource recycling society / healthy society.
  4. Acquire the ability to give presentations about one's own results and proposals, including the process of logical thinking and judgment. In addition, students acquire the ability to present proposals to society through communication.

《Biological Sciences course》

  1. Acquire the ability to probe the mysteries of life and life phenomena.
  2. Acquire the ability to learn the physiology and ecology of aquatic organisms, aiming for aquaculture production.

《Bioengineering course》

Acquire the ability to apply biology and bioinformatics to human society with engineering ideas.
